Hello Pirate Grade 3 Families!
We missed all of you over the two week break, and are overjoyed to welcome your extraordinary children back to school. We noticed everyone grew, both physically and mentally, over the last two weeks. Idea! One day of school to two weeks of vacation. ;) Rest, relaxation and reflection are so important to our good health.
Suzanne Barrow joined our morning meeting today. She revisited the Toolbox tools with our class. She pointed out that we have only three months left of the school year (only 5 ten day cycles!), and focus and hard work is the goal for Grade 3 AND the entire school. Your child set a Toolbox goal, reflected on the tool he or she wants to work hardest on achieving by year's end. Ask your child the tool(s) they chose, why, and the ideas they have for reaching his or her goal.
We have begun fractions in math. You can support our fraction unit by exploring everyday fractions at home. Fractions as part of a whole, as well as part of a group, are both ways to approach an at-home fraction story or fraction experiment. Please also continue to "pound those multi-divi facts" at home. Our goal is everyone is fluent with all multi-divi facts through X11 (or X12!) by the end of the school year. Big Brainz, flashcards, whatever works! Five minutes a day! We will let you know the date of the end of year multi-divi test next week.
In RWS, we are learning the important components and common features of non-fiction books (i.e Chapter Headings, Glossary, Index, Maps and Diagrams, Sidebars etc.). The book and subject we are investigating is Titanic. We have many great titles in the classroom we will explore, in addition to everyone reading Fact Tracker: Titanic. We encourage you to support research at home by checking non-fiction books out of the library, bookmarking age approprite websites for your child to explore, and watching documentaries on the subject. Of course, a trip to Vegas for the Luxor Titanic exhibit is also a fun option! Perhaps a class trip? We will take the children to the exhibit, while you all hit the game floor.
A few quick reminders: next week is zero-waste week. Please keep this in mind when packing lunches and snacks. We will also be collecting bagged e-waste during morning car line.
Please pack plenty of snacks for your child. We have rapid growth occurring here in the classroom, and we need lots of fuel. Frequent tank refills help us stay happy, focused and joyful!
Be well,
Nina and John
