"So you mean we won't be in school for 4 days?! Ugh!!" -Stevenson Third Grader This week we explored mental math, finished building our communities, and began our quest to achieve our year-long reading goals. We also finished our class read-aloud book titled Frindle by Andrew Clements. Don't be surprised if your child starts using the word 'Frindle' around the house! (we'll let you figure out what it means). This week also marked the students' first instructional experience in cursive writing. Time will be devoted in the coming weeks to review proper pencil grip, hand placement, paper tilt, and all of the necessary components that create successful cursive writing habits. Despite not seeing it often, students are becoming quite capable of reading words and letters in cursive, and it will only be a matter of time before they are writing in it full time! Just how good of problem solvers can third graders be? This week in our Harkness discussions, the students worked together through dialogue to problem solve a) how to prevent all of the markers from getting the wrong caps put on them b) where to place our community projects and c) the best use of the fidget toys. Your children are gifted thinkers and problem solvers. We can't wait to see what they solve next! Kindly, Nina and John Third Grade Team |
