Thank you for your wonderful children. What a terrific week had by all: tall (us) and small (your children!). We will update this blog every week by end of day Friday. Please check your email for blog update alert blasts.
Quick Reminders:
- Please label everything your child brings to school
- Parent volunteer training 9/18 at 8:15am with Mrs. Barrow
- Check your chid's folder nightly for additional communications from your teachers
This Week:
- MATH: We learned several new math games and "card tricks." SKUNK, Meta-Forms and Blokus were particular favorites. These games reviewed basic one and two digit addition and subtraction, critical thinking and problem solving, and base ten concepts. Next week we will administer our benchmark Singapore and fluency assessments. We will begin our first unit on place value. Look for more information mid-week in your child's homework folder. The games mentioned above are available for purchase on Amazon, or demonstrated on YouTube, as several of your children have expressed a desire to play at home!
- READING WORKSHOP: This week we launched our Independent Reading program. Your child knows the expectations in regard to collecting accurate daily "scientific" data on his or her independent reading progress (the Reading Log). Your child also has learned and practiced library browsing and check-out skills. Next week your child will set individual independent reading goals for the year. We will also set a class wide goal. It has to do with balloons, the number of books outside of school we read as a class, and...hot fudge sundaes!!!! Next week we will also begin individualized reading assessments. You can support your child's reading success by engaging in rich conversation with him about his daily independent reading, reading goals and progress.
- WRITING WORKSHOP: We brainstormed our Hope and Dreams (i.e. goals) for the school year. Next, we wrote a first draft on official Grade 3 writing paper (double lined, Handwriting Without Tears-HWT). Next week we will complete our final drafts, create our stained glass portraits to go with them, and hang them in the window. Please visit the classroom anytime after the end of next week to see your child's goals for the school year!
- SEC (SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL CURRICULUM): We have been learning, practicing and playing team building games, activities and exercises. We are working to improve active listening skills-something we will spend the entire year doing (it's a tough skill, right grown-ups?!). Next week we will add Conflict Resolution skills. We will make sure to send the Conflict Resolution script home as a homework assignment.
- SPELLING AND HANDWRITING: OMG! Cursive. Well, a little. The hot fudge sundae party yesterday derailed the handwriting (HWT) intro. Keep your eyes peeled for information coming home next week. We have assessed your child's pencil grip, handedness and posture. Next week we will assess handwriting neatness, formation (print), fluency (speed), and size. We have given a baseline assessment for spelling syllabication knowledge.
