MATH
You may not, but your child does! Ask him or her what is a chubby? What is its value? What is the value of six chubbies? What is his or her favorite chubby dance move? (Hint: something to do with place value!)
This week we dove right in to our first unit of Singapore math, learned three new math games to support understanding of place value concepts and numbers to 99,000, began communicating in our math journals and cracked our workbooks. Next week we begin Unit 1 math vocabulary, as well as our textbooks. Please keep an eye out for a unit vocabulary list and enrichment activities.
ADVANCED TOOLBOX
Have you heard about "Whole Body Listening?" Did you know to be an advanced listener, you need to use eight body parts? Your child does! Practice Advanced Listening at home. Your child has set a goal to improve on one challenging body part this month. Have him or her share his or her goal with you so that you can support success at home and school.
Please come to our Toolbox parent night September 30.
Knowing our Toolbox vocabulary and program in order to practice at home will pay dividends for your learner!
Next week we begin Conflict Resolution, mediation and conferencing.
LANGUAGE ARTS
We continue to focus on the critical skill of visualizing while listening to a read aloud or reading on one's own. We call it "making a movie in your head." The director? Your child! Studies show children who are good text visualizers have significantly higher levels of reading comprehension. Please support this skill at home. Have your child read out loud to you for ten minutes or so. Before they begin, remind them to "make a movie in your head" of the storyline. After reading, have your child retell the "movie" from the beginning, describing action, character, setting, colors, sounds and emotions. Action narrative should unfold in order and logically...just like a movie!
Have a wonderful weekend and much love from Nina and John
