Greetings from Grade 3! Our service learning day at the SPC was a great success. Many thanks for your donations; the SPCA staff were hugely grateful. Grade 3 students enjoyed the afternoon learning about the SPCA's organization, and the importance of showing empathy for our non-human friends, as well as our human ones!
The trip to the SPCA also helped us better understand the point-of-view of our literary friend, Ivan. We now better understand how he might feel lonely, depressed, trapped or unloved in his "box." We understand that humans are not the only animals capable of emotion.
GREAT NEWS! Stevenson now has a school license for Big Brainz. Grade 3 was lucky to be the pilot classroom for the Timez Attack game within Big Brainz. The pilot program showed student engagement, as well as significant gains in multiplication fact fluency, for most Grade 3 students. You will receive a letter home explaining how to access this free and important resource. All multiplication/division facts (0X-12X), are expected to be mastered by year end. One way to support your child's success in multi-divi fact fluency is to ensure he or she does Big Brainz at home, every day, for 15 minutes (no more, no less). It's fun, and it works!
In writing workshop, we took a step back this week to review the Grade 3 "NO EXCUSES!" list for writing assignments (yes, those caps are Mrs. Phillips screaming from the mountaintops!). Please reinforce at home and whenever possible: correct spelling of the first 300 Frye words, use of dictionary (or parent, or app, or teacher) for unknown spelling of non-Frye words, correct punctuation, correct capitalization, cursive and....complete sentences with a subject, a predicate and (for superstar status) compound sentences (use connecting words like for, and, nor, because, but, or, yet, so: FANBOYS). Thank you for your support!
Here are samples from our Empathy Box this week. What kind souls we have in Grade 3:
"Once I used empathy when Spencer got hurt and I helped him up and to get ice." (Logan)
"A time when somebody was nice to me was when Brice helped me when I fell in tag."
"I noticed that Garrett stepped into Jack L.'s shoes when he hit his head on the monkey bars. Garrett called a teacher."
"Once Scarlett had empathy because she brought me to the office when one of my brace wires came out." (Rosie)
"Jack W. helped me by picking up my towels at the SPCA." (Russell)
"I showed empathy when Libby was sad and I asked her what was wrong." (Ashley)
"One day in music class Holly was having trouble with her notes, so I helped her figure out which notes were which." (Catz)
"When we were at the SPCA I was really, really thirsty and I was walking around and Fatima came up to me and gave me some of her water." (Scarlett)
"I used empathy when Jack W. was hurt on the ground. I helped Jack up and asked if he was OK."
"Once when I was worried about our Egyptian project I went to Scarlett and she showed empathy and stepped into my shoes and helped me out." (Chloe H.)
"Once when I fell in four-square Harper asked if I was OK and helped me up."
"I used my empathy tool when I helped Chloe pick up her goldfish."
"I used my empathy tool when I tripped Spencer on the field and helped in up."
"I stepped into Garrett's shoes when we were playing knockout. He was discouraged and I said "We'll get 'em next time!." That made him happy!"
"I helped Jack L. write his name in The One and Only Ivan because he was absent."
"I gave the animals at the SPCA food and blankets etc."
